Well Done, Good & Faithful Servant

“Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'” (Matthew 28:18- 20)

Dear Laguna Faith brothers and sisters,

Our Memorial Sunday celebration marked being together for one year as Laguna Faith. Thank you to all who helped and those who joined us at Salt Creek Park for our one-year celebration of having our doors open and serving as a church to all.

One year together – and what a noteworthy and miraculous season it has been: God provided Laguna Faith with the most amazing “church venues” for us to worship Him – during the COVID season of lack and sorrow around the world, with all churches closed down in California, we worshipped God in four of Laguna Beach’s premiere venues: The Inn’s Pacific Terrace, Art-A-Fair (the entire Art-A-Fair), 7 Degrees, and Surf & Sand Resort. While the rest of California stayed at home, we had in-person, true fellowship as God desires for us, forming many lifetime friendships that began during the Summer of 2020. We shared much laughter, but we also shared many tears while mourning our friend and Brother Luis’ passing; we enjoyed great musical talent –vocalists & guitarists Vonnie, Ed, Mark, Judy, and Worship Director Scott, as well as percussionist Matt and all our vocalists from Christine’s high soprano to Bill’s deep bass voice to our regular choir Bruce, Michelle, Rosemary, Becca, Lauren, Fara, and Susan; we served the community during Christmas and Easter as Laguna Faith was one of the few churches open in the surrounding areas; we honored Christ’s birth with Christmas Eve candlelight service; we celebrated Easter week with three services (Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday); and most importantly, we fulfilled the Great Commission to go out into the world telling people about the Lord Jesus, and making disciples, as several people came to know the Lord Jesus while at our services, telling us so, and asking for prayers.

Laguna Faith launched in May 2020 in response to a direct calling – so that God’s people would have a place to worship in public and share fellowship, and we did. Many of you were there for our first service on June 6, 2020 at The Inn, overlooking the vast Pacific and feeling the ocean breeze – when the rest of the world was closed down and was afraid to worship God.

About 10 days ago, the government reversed its COVID rulings over worship centers – now all churches are allowed to be freely open, even without regard to masks and social distancing. So it seems our work is done.

We hope you will celebrate in spirit with us as you recall our significant year together – so much growth, so many needs fulfilled, so many challenges overcome together, and so much love shared.

We at Laguna Faith give our heartfelt thanks to Elder Bruce for his year-long guidance, commitment, and support of Laguna Faith. He was like a strong rock, there every week, bringing friends and fellow musicians, and a smile. Associate Pastor Blake, thank you for leading us in Holy Communion and prayer during many services, and for heading up our prayer team and diligently praying for us. Brothers Matt and Daniel, we thank you for tirelessly giving of yourselves in servant ministry – showing up every week to unload dozens of chairs and equipment from Roger’s truck, then setting up and tearing down. Not only did you help, but you helped weekly, and you helped without complaint – ever.  Sister Minerva, we thank you too; for your hard work and fortitude, and dedication to following God – all behind the scenes. Such a huge part of Laguna Faith was, in fact, behind the scenes – active prayer ministries, supportive fellowship mid-week, ministry planning, and music rehearsals. Each of us at Laguna Faith are grateful for prayers received, both individually and corporately, for battles fought in the heavenly realms and for the care and compassion of our prayer warriors by Sisters: Christina T., Nenah, Christine R., Jenni, Carolee, and Ann. We extend our thanks to all the brothers and sisters who contributed their time, efforts, and donations in making Laguna Faith possible – you know who you are. Thank you for listening to God’s calling; to being inspired by Christ to help. It could not have been done without your contribution.

By the leading of the Spirit, we are in agreement that God would like us to put a pause on Laguna Faith’s Sunday services at this time. We believe we have fulfilled what He called us to do and now we are waiting on Him for the next ministry.

“Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46)

Stay tuned! We are waiting to hear on the Lord for our next mission. In the meantime, you are invited to join our weekly Wednesday co-ed Bible Study (6:30pm) in Monarch Beach as well as monthly fellowship events. (If you’re on our active list already for birthdays and fellowship events, we will be in touch – if you want to make sure you get invited to our next event, email us to be included.)

Every Sunday, for the rest of my life, I will remember each of you and will keep you in my prayers. You are in my heart.

May the G-d of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him,

Laguna Faith Co-Founders Roger, Katya, and Nenah

Laguna Faith: A Positive Addition to Our Community

Although it may seem like it, not everything that is happening around us is negative. Positive events are popping up all around our community. To be more specific, Laguna Faith. This new, one-of-kind faith gathering has been popping up in some of Laguna Beach’s most prestigious addresses: The Inn at Laguna Beach, Art-A-Fair, and Seven Degrees.

“During this COVID season of business and school and church closings, many people have become isolated and lonely,” says Laguna Faith co-founder, Roger Berney. “We saw a need in our community, a need in Laguna Beach, and decided to launch.”

In May 2020, when the government announced restrictions for Houses of Worship, those with over 100 members and those that met indoors were ordered to close, churches in Laguna Beach were forced to close their doors. In response, a close-knit bible study group (that included a professional speaker and also a seminarian) decided to launch an outdoor church gathering where Christians of all denominations, as well as the “spiritual but not religious,” could gather safely together to hear positive messages, listen to live worship music, and share in-person friendships.

“We used to call it a ‘watch party’ or ‘faith gathering’ but over the past eight months, we have evolved into a real church community – but nothing like any I’ve seen before. I like to say that we are a one-of-a-kind, new kind of church experience,” Roger explains. “Definitely a new kind of church experience,” he emphasizes.

The pop-up aspect of setting up each Sunday with 50 white chairs (socially distanced), music and AV equipment, large screen TVs,  Starbucks “travelers,” and home baked cookies, makes this church experience unique.

“It’s informal and everyone is welcome – you don’t have to be Christian,“ says Katya Novak, Laguna Faith Elder. “We are a place of spiritual refuge, offering faith, hope, and love to Laguna Beach residents and visitors.”

So what’s a typical Sunday like at Seven Degrees? Service begins at 11 a.m. with a short welcome message, followed by two songs with five to 15 vocalists and guitarists, and then a streamed message on large screens by one of the nation’s megachurch, best-selling-authors and pastors (Greg Laurie, Dr. David Jeremiah, Andy Stanley are favorites). After that broadcast, there are two more songs and then a closing prayer.

“Afterwards, everyone hangs out and talks and about 10 of us or more go to lunch at Kitchen in the Canyon,” explains Blake, Laguna Faith Elder.

During the month of January, you can find Laguna Faith at Seven Degrees outdoor terrace (next to the Sawdust entrance) every Sunday at 11 a.m. From February onward, Laguna Faith will alternate their pop-up locations between Seven Degrees and Art-A-Fair. For the latest pop-up location, visit www.LagunaFaith.com or call (949)436-9693.

7 Degrees

During the month of January, we will be gathering at 7 Degrees venue’s outdoor terrace every Sunday at 11 a.m.

Join us for a new kind of church experience – outdoors, members from all Christian denominations, live worship music, positive messages by our in-person pastors, and broadcast messages by our favorite megachurch pastors: Greg Laurie, David Jeremiah, Andy Stanley and more. There’s nothing like this new church model! Try it. We think you’ll love it.

Outdoor venue next to Sawdust

We are very excited about our new outdoor location: right next to Sawdust (if you are standing in front of the Sawdust sign on the white building, a few feet to your right is the driveway that leads to our venue).

We are located at the Seven Degrees venue – on their back outside terrace – with waterfalls in the background and a heated white canopy – it is the perfect location. We will be there for the rest of December – don’t miss our Candlelight Christmas Eve service on 12/24/2020 at 3:30pm and also every Sunday at 11 a.m. We hope to see you soon!

Laguna Faith: how we came to be…

Laguna Faith began as a home group that met weekly for bible study and fellowship, composed of diverse men and women from 15 nations and different churches. We are all colors of the rainbow!

During the troublesome seasons of COVID-19 pandemic, a quarantine that closed down offices and churches, black killings, riots, and economic crashes, Laguna Faith strengthened.

When the government banned churches over 100 members from gathering, we knew it was the right time to bring our home group to a public space so that anyone who desires to go to worship and fellowship with other believers can do so. Then, after lifting the ban of closures for a few weeks, the government reissued more stringent guidelines. As of yesterday, the Governor announced that all worship centers that met indoors must close. Again, G-d has graced us and we are allowed to remain open. We have outdoor worship areas where we already were broadcasting services and enjoying live worship music.

Join us as we worship God the Father, Jesus Christ our Lord, and the Holy Spirit!

We are OPEN despite closings

It has been a tumultuous time of the COVID-19 pandemic, quarantine, economic losses and unemployment, black killings and riots. Many LB residents have been wanting to attend church services and spiritual gatherings for comfort and connection, however the quarantine guidelines have closed all church buildings until the Fall.

During these difficult times, good has transpired. A new place to worship in Laguna Beach, Laguna Faith, opened its doors 2 months ago, among the quarantine guidelines, it is one of the few “worship centers” that can remain open (under 100 people and we meet outside!). All churches in Laguna Beach and California were forced to close yesterday due to the Governor’s guidelines for indoor meeting spaces.

Laguna Faith is open to those who consider themselves “spiritual but not religious” and all Christian and Jewish believers. LB Saddleback meets weekly on Sundays at 11 a.m. on the rooftop deck of The Inn at Laguna Beach, overlooking main beach and the ocean. We have free coffee and tea starting at 10:30 a.m.!
